Imagine a thirty-year-old woman at your congregation who will only drink milk. We would certainly worry about this otherwise-healthy adult who won’t eat “real food,” all of us realizing that her physical well-being is in danger. But it’s much the same – with even more undesirable repercussions – with a lack of Spiritual Maturity.
There are fully adult people (some much older than 30) who are only interested in taking in spiritual food in its most basic form; perhaps “fluffy” devotionals mostly geared to women. They might think they can only handle elementary concepts because that is what they’re used to. They stop growing and maturing, leaving most biblical concepts in the hands of preachers and theology professors, not realizing we never need to stop growing in our faith. When that more shallow faith is shaken up, it’s much easier to get completely knocked off balance.
This kind of situation is definitely a problem. Spiritual immaturity can be contagious, often promoting the idea that church attendance and a hefty dose of morality are the most important things about a mature faith. While these things are definitely important, not having a fuller understanding of the whole counsel of God can deceive us into believing we are fine exactly where (and how) we are.
The good news is that spiritual maturity is also contagious! (That’s why you’re here, right?) Surround yourself with other people who realize its importance (in real life and online) and it becomes the best kind of positive peer pressure I can think of! 😉💕
