Thanks to Ashley for creating the June scripture writing plan on Taming the Tongue. Here’s what she says about this issue of controlling our speech (and how difficult it is – whew!!):
“First I drink the coffee, then I do the things.”
“I’m into fitness. Fit’ness taco in my mouth.”
“Running late is my cardio.”
I love the funny t-shirts that are so popular right now. Most of them, that is. There’s one that makes me cringe all over. It reads, “I love Jesus but I cuss a little.” It makes me sad how often I see this phrase come up.
Believe it or not, the apostle James spoke out about this very attitude about 2000 years ago! He said, “If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.” (James 1:26)
(Preach, James! I think James might be accused of being judgmental in today’s time, but he wasn’t afraid to tell it like it is!)
I don’t own that t-shirt and never will, and I can tell you that cursing just isn’t something I’ve ever struggled with. However, I cannot claim to have perfected the art of bridling my tongue. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve spoken out of anger, hunger, impatience, selfishness, frustration, pride, etc., I’d have enough money to buy all the funny t-shirts.
The truth is that taming our tongues is HARD. James 3:7-10 says, “For every kind of beast has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.”
We are called to be righteous — with every word, every breath, every thought, every action. Please join us this month in our scripture writing plan where we will explore what God’s Word tells us about taming the tongue!

Well….. you’ve done it again! How I appreciate your being in tune with The Holy Spirit to bring us just what we need, in the way of focused study time. Keep on keepin’ on ! Now… where’s my muzzle 🤐
Thank you SO much for everything you do for us! It is very much appreciated. I also agree about the Jesus/I cuss a little slogan. The other one that always makes me crazy is “I need a little coffee and Jesus.” You have got to be kidding. The Holy Spirit that lives in me is rears up my broken heart over that statement. How dare people belittle the Mighty and Majestic name of our Creator! One day….. I pray that people will wake up and discover exactly who Jesus Christ and what He’s sacrificed on our behalf. We…..who deserve nothing but by grace have received everything! God bless you. Beverly
