ANY PORT IN A STORM?
I heard a friend speak recently about a comment made to her by another friend. Basically, this other friend was venting because, as she was suffering through a very difficult situation, her faith and trust in God “did nothing for her.” Her problem still pursued and, seemingly, her faith in God did not absolve the pain and frustration she faced. She was troubled because she believed that her faith and trust in God should fix her problem.
Isn’t this Satan’s slippery way of pulling us away from God?
Surely if God was with you, he would save you from this problem.
You probably haven’t prayed enough for this hurt to go away.
Does God really love you? Then why are you still suffering?
God would never let a faithful person be harmed like this.
Why do we treat God as an “if/then” God? He doesn’t react as we act. He doesn’t suddenly come to aid when we call, as though he were our own personal genie.
GOD IS OUR REFUGE. HE IS THE PORT IN THE STORM.
When we seek God and take refuge in him, we are promised protection, safety, and rest for our souls. When we shelter with God, we are trusting that he will make a way for us and comfort us when we face difficult things. And we will face difficult things. We are not promised perfect lives here on earth, but we do have a perfect Father in Heaven. In him we can have all hope and faith. When God is our refuge, we anchor our souls to his will and his word. From there, he has all control and keeps us safe. Nothing else begins to compare with his love and peaceful protection. Revelation 7:15 describes the very scene we so long to partake in. Chapter 7 reveals what God’s faithful children will see and do when they are welcomed into Heaven. “Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence.”
Let’s not fall for Satan’s lies and seek shelter from temporary, earthly comforts that will only fade. Let’s take refuge in our creator, our eternal safety! If you haven’t already, join us as we continue this month’s study on “Our Refuge.”
