A couple of years into our marriage, Joshua and I wrote the biggest check we’d ever written at that point in our lives. It wasn’t for a house or a car, or even for a hospital bill. It was to pay off the last of his student loans.
I’ll be honest, writing that check made my stomach twist and turn into some impressive knots. But the feeling that came from lifting that burden of debt off our shoulders? Now that was sweet.
Have you ever experienced that feeling of freedom? The feeling that comes after a debt has been paid. Perhaps it’s the feeling that comes from a clear scan after a battle with cancer. Maybe it’s what you feel after graduating, retiring, or finishing a race.
That feeling of relief, as if you’re so light you could float, is exquisite. But it’s nothing in comparison to the freedom that Christ offers. He told the Jews who believed in Him, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” {John 8:32}.
It’s no surprise that the first sin came through deception. Once Satan got Adam and Eve to believe a lie, he was able to control them. But Christ offers us the truth. And with that truth comes ultimate freedom. That’s why we’ll be writing through the word in July’s Scripture Writing Plan: Freedom in Christ.
Understanding Freedom
There’s a huge misconception among those in the world, and sadly among many Christians, that freedom is simply the ability to do whatever we want. Or that we can do whatever we want, as long as we have a good reason to do it.
Freedom in Christ is so much bigger than that. Freedom in Christ comes at the ultimate price, a price that we did not have to pay. It also comes with responsibility, a responsibility we can accept or decline.
But there’s another misconception that’s also common, and that’s the idea that we are not free, even in Christ. We aren’t free from our past. We aren’t free from what others think of us. We aren’t free from condemnation. Those are lies that cause many people to lose sleep at night.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
That’s why this month we’re offering our study on Beating Worry & Anxiety (and it’s on sale for only $5 here through July 31, 2022). In this series of lessons, worksheets, and inspirational graphics, you’ll tackle topics like:
- When to Worry
