What sights, smells, or sounds come to mind when you hear the word harvest? For me, it’s the smell of tobacco being cured in a barn. If you’re from middle TN, you know that smell. It might be something else for you. But whatever associations you have, the concept of harvest is powerful. It’s an idea quite prevalent in Scripture, and it’s our theme for this month’s Scripture Writing Plan.
Why We Chose Harvest
In the beginning, we know that God created the heavens and the earth. Jesus was there, too, as part of the creative genius behind this enormous endeavor {John 1:1-3}. Can you imagine the great care and interest that this supernatural team displayed in their creation? The formations of ecosystems, the life cycles of each living organism, the interlocking plans for plants and animals and humans…
God always looked towards the theme of harvest, surely. Nothing was made without a purpose (though I have yet to find the purpose of a mosquito, I’m sure it’s there). He knew we’d need to gather or reap from agricultural crops to have food to eat; in the same way, we gain or lose intangible things by what we sow…or don’t sow.
This month’s Harvest theme brings all of these physical and spiritual types of harvest into one central frame. We’ll see how God provided for His people, asking for their first fruits, and also included instructions for His people to look after the less fortunate in their midst. We’ll look closely at the story of Ruth, of how her life was changed by gleaning in the right field, but also how her faith led to an even more meaningful spiritual harvest for her and her family.
We’ll also consider how Jesus spoke of harvest in His earthly ministry. His agricultural references certainly reflected the cultural understanding of the day. In finishing the month, we’ll look at what things we should focus on – and what to avoid – for a good spiritual harvest on the last day.
October’s Offerings
We are so excited about this month’s Scripture Writing Plan! We are also excited to offer our study, How to Be Sure of Your Salvation, this month over on Teachable. This study is always 100% FREE, because it’s that important to us.
We want you to be confident in God’s salvation {1 John 5:13}, and we know that confidence only comes by aligning ourselves with what God has told us.
Even if you rest firmly in God’s grace, we encourage you to enroll in this course. Not only is the study free, but it can help you share the good news with others who may need that assurance.
Waiting for our 2023 calendars, Faith Journals, and scripture cards? Those are in the works! Hopefully, they’ll be up on Etsy soon.
In the meantime, feel free to browse the other goodies we have in the shop. T-shirts are a great Christmas gift idea if you’re already planning ahead. In that case, you have your life together more than I do. Congratulations! Either way, we hope you find something helpful. 😉
